Abstract

Nature has been a source of medical agents for thousands of years. Lantana camara linn., family verbenaceae, commonly known as wild sage, is a flowering shrubs native of tropical America and is cultivated throughout the world as an ornamental . The plant based traditional medicine system continues to play an essential role in health care, with about 80% of the world inhabitants. The plant leaves contain a number of medicinally important compounds. The present study was carried out to identify the phytoconstituents and evaluate antimicrobial activity of hexane extract of Lantana camara leaves. The mass spectra of these phytoconstituents were matched with the database available at National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) library. The Gas chromatography and Mass spectrometry analysis of terpenes, alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, protein etc. lead to identification of 18 compounds. This analysis revealed that the phytoconstituents fraction shows high peak, mainly 2,2,4-trimethyl-3(3,8,12,16-tetramethyl-heptadeca-3,7,11,15-tetraenyl)-cyclohexanol, Cholesta-2,4-diene. The research reveals the potential of hexane extract of Lantana camara leaves as a good source of terpenes, steroids that justify the use of this plant for its various ailments by traditional practitioners. It is used for healing of gastric ulcer, respiratory infections and antipyretic. Lantana camara have therapeutic potential due to the presence of natural agents, Majority of their activity is due to bioactive compounds viz. flavones, isoflavones, flavonoids, anthocyanins, coumarins, lignans, catechins, isocatechins, alkaloids, tannin, saponins and triterpenoids. Bioactive substance from this plant can therefore be employed in the formulation of antimicrobial agents for the treatment of various microbial infection.

Abstract

Microgravity-derived 3-D cell constructs and tissue engineering may provide, for the future, useful tools for generating reliable model systems that couple cheapness and handiness with an increased predictive power, also fostering the integration process of data from genomics, proteomics, metabolic profiling and molecular cell biology. ''Exploiting the third dimension'' is a big challenge for the next decades in life sciences and will require a more complete integration of systems biology approaches into the design and analysis of engineered tissues. The rapid progress in the development of the new micro- and nano-technologies, together with the improvements in imaging technologies and in the establishment of standard experimental protocols, will certainly enhance the possibility of a rapid advance toward this objective.

Abstract

Pseudomonas putida strain was isolated from petroleum polluted soil in Chennai by enrichment culture method to evaluate the biodegradation potential of toluene and xylene. The isolated bacterial strain in this study could grow in Bushnell Haas medium and mineral salt medium containing 1% each of toluene and xylene as the sole source of carbon and energy. The plasmid DNA was isolated by alkali lysis method and separated by agarose gel electrophoresis. The molecular weight of the plasmid was determined as 106Kb. Liquid culture studies were performed to determine the effect of pH and temperature on TX biodegradation. The isolated strain showed maximum degradation at 30° C and at pH 7.0. The kinetics of TX biodegradation was investigated at different time intervals (2.5 Hrs. - 12.5 Hrs.) and the biodegradation rate was maximum between 5 Hrs. and 12.5 Hrs. The conclusions that can be drawn from this study indicate that the microorganism present in this study could contribute significantly to bioremediation of TX pollution.
